Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Jeff and I are currently writing a new musical called TRAILS with bookwriter Christy Hall. Since the musical is about two childhood friends who decide to hike the Appalachian Trail together, we felt a little bit of retro-active research would be appropos.  Fortunately Jeff’s parent’s live up in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusettes near Mt. Greylock, which is a stop on the trail, and the highest point in Southern New England.  Seriously, you can see all the way to Vermont and New Hampshire from up there.  So with Jeff’s Dad driving, Jeff, Christy, her husband Matt Lutz (also a regular Thomson and Mann performer), and I tackled a couple of miles of the famed Appalachian Trail.

Check out the photos…

Hiking the trail even for a few miles was an experience, beautiful folliage, fresh pine, muddy rocky paths and a glimpse at the heart of the American wilderness.

Later we spoke with the proprietor of the Mountain top lodge and restaurant.  Apparently hikers have nicknamed Mt. Greylock “Hamburger Hill” because they can smell the lunchtime food cooking from miles away, as he put it, “it’s the best advertising we can get.”  When asked about the strangest hikers that he’s experienced, he mentioned several nude hikers, and a cross dresser named Big Red.

Jonathan Larson Awards

As a part of our new blog, we’ll need to do a little travelling into the past, to tell you about cool things that happened before we started the blog.  We’ll be interspersing these with posts dealing with things that have and will be happening. Bear with us, and eventually we’ll achieve synchronicity!

Us with our awards...

Jeff and Jordan holding their Jonathan Larson Awards...

Back in February 2008 we received a Jonathan Larson Award. Given that RENT and Tick, Tick, Boom were major inspirations for us, both artistically and personally, this was a huge deal. And that was before we knew who’d be there!

We realize that there might be a few of you who don’t know who Jonathan Larson was, beyond RENT, or the significance of the Jonathan Larson award. In short, Larson believed in musical theatre, and he believed in bringing it into the modern age.  His tragic death at the age of thirty-eight and the enormous success of RENT highlighted the struggle and hard choices for those attempting to make it in the world of musical theatre. His family, understanding this created the award in his memory. Given the amazingly talented people who have won before us, we are thrilled to be mentioned in this illustrious company.

More to come…

The Beginning

After spending years and years writing musicals, it seemed that there was a story to tell beyond those of the characters that I’ve written lyrics for, and for which Jeff has provided music. It seems that people want to know “how it happens”. How do musicals come into existence, from first idea to full production.

We don’t know all the answers, but perhaps by turning our website into this shiny new blog-site, we’ll be able to share our story, and the story of our projects and the world of musical theatre writing with you.

So here it is, the Thomson and Mann blog/page/thingy.

Our goals-

1) Share our passion for writing musicals with anyone willing to listen.

2) Let you know about the amazing people we’ve met along the way who have influenced us, with whom we’ve worked, and those with whom we hope to work someday.

3) Talk about the nuts and bolts, from songwriting, to generating interest, to creating events, to taking meetings, to simply surviving while pursuing a dream.

4) Try to promote ourselves and our work without being obnoxious about it.

We hope you enjoy, and hope to see you here again soon.
